Mel Carter is a Yonsei Japanese American and non-binary artist based in Seattle on Coast Salish and Duwamish lands. Their practice is informed by experiences within the Japanese diaspora, queerness, explorations in modern witchcraft, folk practices and rituals, medicinal healing, waste reduction and environmental sovereignty in the cultural context of the Pacific Northwest.
Von Coffin lives in Redmond, Washington. They hold an MFA from Yale University (2016) and BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2008). Recent exhibitions include Pit Stop at Double Garage in Seattle and The Hard Problem at Abrons Art Center in New York.
Coffin’s practice is a combination of classical painting studies and skills learned working various jobs, including food display and production, fabrication, and art crating. They invented a unique glazing technique to transform construction materials into colorful gems, which act as data or markers of familiar sensory experience. The resulting work considers the relationship between industrial production, class structures, product design, and pleasure seeking.
