(Pedro Costa, 1989, Portugal, 99 min, in Portuguese with English subtitles)
One of the great debuts in cinema history, Pedro Costa’s first feature film (shot when the director was just 29 years old) is a stylish and atmospheric fairy tale about two young, impoverished brothers who make their own way in the streets of Portugal after their father’s death. Stunningly shot in black-and-white, O Sangue (Blood) evokes the work of master filmmakers that influenced Costa (such as Fritz Lang, Kenji Mizoguchi, Robert Bresson, and Nicholas Ray) while also displaying his own emerging vision as a world-class auteur.
